Two men stand accused of a very elaborate scheme to raid homes and businesses and make off with loads of cash. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Louis Joseph Aprile and Michael Garveigh are now out on $20,000 bond and ordered to cease their impersonations of law enforcement.
Both Aprile and Garveigh are employed in fairly reputable positions, Aprile as a software contractor and Garveigh as a commodities broker. Both men, however, had their sights set on being agents of the law in order to collect serious money.
Aprile posed as a NSA agent while Garveigh acted as a agent of British Intelligent forces. The men met repeatedly with Alpharetta police in order to set up raids on houses and businesses that the men stated were involved in a terror plot.
They told police that the targets were going to be transporting explosives from Florida to the area and that the fictitious terror suspects had to be taken down soon. The police were told their departments would “get the glory” for the raids and would also be allowed to keep security clearances, weapons and additional equipment.
Although it is not clear what credentials the men showed police, they were convincing enough to have several meetings with the department. Police got suspicious at the men’s insistence of not involving the FBI. That is when law enforcement decided to contact federal authorities.
Fraud and criminal impersonation schemes hardly ever go to this extreme. If successful, this would have been the type of scenario to end up on a Hollywood set. While these men certainly seemed to know their stuff, it wasn’t quite enough to pull off the money making finale they wanted.
Facing charges of fraud can be frightening, even if it’s just for bad checks. You don’t have to be a big time criminal to fear the gavel and the thought of potential prison time. If you are facing any sort of white collar crime charges, I am interested in helping.
I have handled many fraud cases in the area and know the local courts. Call me today to discuss your case and we can develop a plan together.
