The Home Park community near Georgia Tech is experiencing a rash of robberies that has residents frightened to leave home. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that there has been 12 attacks since February, the majority of them against Tech students.
The robberies vary slightly but as suspects from one such incident are behind bars, the attacks continue, leading police to believe there are multiple suspects. Atlanta Police are unsure if the attacks are gang related or not but think the suspects are all young men.
Residents have become increasingly frightened to walk alone in the neighborhood for fear of facing gunmen wanting to take their money and possessions. Over 70% of the residents in this neighborhood are students at Georgia Tech. The community also contains several upscale condo units.
Robberies are taken very seriously in the Georgia criminal courts. The crime combines the action of a theft with the threat and even commission of a violent assault.
Three suspects facing charges for the shooting robbery of Tech student Patrick Whaley are up against charges of aggravated assault, robbery, and kidnapping. These three suspects range in age from 17-19. police state these younger suspects have no concept of consequences, making the acts even scarier.
For the aggravated assault charge alone, each suspect faces up to 20 years in prison. There is no doubt these young men are frightened of their bleak looking future.
