A gang tied Georgia methamphetamine ring originating in Gwinnett County has arms reaching into Cherokee, Pickens, and Cobb Counties. Authorities in Cherokee are claiming they have made 5 arrests so far, assisting in shutting down this wide scale operation.
As stated in this AJC article, the gang is based in Gwinnett but has distributors throughout the area. Their goods of choice: crystal meth. Methamphetamines have seen a dramatic increase since their introduction on the scene in the 1980s.
Cherokee County officials state they are still investigating about 20 distributors in the area and aim to dismantle the gang’s reach into their communities.
So far, officials have seized over 160 grams worth around $18,000 from all of their arrests.
The majority of those arrested thus far are facing meth trafficking or meth dealing offenses. Some have only been charged with possession however.
Trafficking is the most serious drug charge under Georgia law. The law requires you be in possession of a certain amount of a drug to be able to be charged with this offense. Trafficking carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years in prison.
Quite different, distributing meth can get you a prison sentence of 5-10 years for your first offense.
Possession is, by far, the most common drug offense. Possession of methamphetamines, a Schedule II drug, can carry 2-15 years in prison for a first time offense. Possession of marijuana is quite different and considered a misdemeanor. For your first offense of possession of marijuana you will likely be eligible for a conditional discharge.
