Seventy-nine year old Norma Cheren looks like a typical grandmother. But she wasn’t doling out cookies like many other women her age—she is accused of selling marijuana, and lots of it.
According to reports, the police caught Cheren trying to sell marijuana near the Cheesecake Factory in Buckhead. Then, last week, they raided her home on Vickers Street in southeast Atlanta. What they found surprised even them.
Cheren had nine pounds of marijuana and $130,000 in cash, some of it hidden in old fashioned lunch pails. She is now being held in the Fulton County Jail.
In court to answer to the charges, she informed the judge that she was nervous, and rightfully so. Drug distribution carries a significant sentence if convicted. At this time, it isn’t clear what her charges are.
Neighbors say they are completely shocked, that they assumed Cheren was just a typical old lady.
“I would have never expected it,” said one neighbor. “Little old lady. She lives by herself, always see her coming in, coming out. Thought she was going to work.”
Though she reportedly received many visitors, neighbors assumed it was friends and family checking in on Cheren and taking care of her.
The story just goes to prove that people from all walks of life have the potential to be caught on the wrong side of the law. There is no one stereotypical criminal for which everyone who faces a criminal charge fits the mold. Instead, you, your friends, or family members—no matter your age, occupation, or income—could be facing criminal charges.
Most people who are caught with marijuana, however, aren’t caught with nine pounds like Ms. Cheren. Usually, it’s far less. Still, the cops don’t need to suspect you are a major dealer to bring out the Drug Task Force and SWAT team. As Cheren’s case points out, they will raid anyone’s home.
