Is Heroin Use Skyrocketing In Atlanta Suburbs?
According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, heroin use may be rising, particularly in the affluent suburbs of Atlanta. The story cites several instances of heroin addiction leading to lethal overdoses and questions whether or not the problem is growing. Many other major cities across the nation have also seen a jump in heroin related deaths and many others also attribute the rise to former prescription drug addicts seeking a more intense high. Former Federal Judge Receives Jail Stint for Drugs/Weapons
A former federal judge was sentenced this week for three misdemeanor charges. He pled for leniency, as did his wife and adult children. But the sentencing judge ultimately felt that jail time was necessary stating “He has disgraced his office…he has encouraged disrespect for the law.” [Read more…]
“Major” Fake-Pot Bust in Gwinnett County Georgia
My Fox-Atlanta reported this week on what they called a “major” fake pot bust in Gwinnett County. According to the report, a fifty-seven year old man was arrested with sixty packages of “spice” and 1,000 “marijuana pipes”. Search and Seizure In GA Drug Case Questioned
Under the United States’ Constitution, we are protected against illegal searches and seizures. Because of this protection police can’t just walk up to someone and search them for no reason. If the search isn’t justified the evidence found during the search isn’t likely to be admissible in court.
The legitimacy of a search is often questioned during criminal trials. If the defense attorney can show the search was illegal, the evidence against a defendant can be thrown out and the charges potentially dropped. [Read more…]
Drug Cases Clogging Gwinnett, GA Courts
Gwinnett County, just outside Atlanta Metro, has undertaken a huge effort of cracking down on drug cartels. This area seems to have attracted large drug rings because of its location and the ability to easily blend into the community.
