A few decades ago, the headline would have more likely read that the Georgia Governor signed a “tough” on crime bill, but times are changing in some ways and state lawmakers are beginning to understand that tough penalties and severe punishments aren’t always the best decisions. This week, Governor Nathan Deal signed a bill that would give judges more leeway in imposing mandatory minimum sentences, allowing them to use at least some level of discretion rather than being bound by rules that dictated the same sentence for all similar crimes. Atlanta To Add More Street Cameras
Soon, nearly 800 cameras will be eyeing downtown Atlanta, all in the name of crime prevention. The City Council voted this week to add more than 100 cameras to those already in place. To the tune of $2.25 million, officials say these cameras will work to make tourists, students, and Atlanta residents feel safe. [Read more…]
Georgia Offenders Released From Sex Offender Registry
The Georgia sex offender registry was known as being one of the most all-encompassing in the nation. New changes recently made, however, are allowing some offenders to get their named removed from the list and move on with their life. In an effort to save law enforcement time and money, some low risk offenders will no longer be required to register and others can petition the court to have their name removed on a case by case basis. Drug Cases Clogging Gwinnett, GA Courts
Gwinnett County, just outside Atlanta Metro, has undertaken a huge effort of cracking down on drug cartels. This area seems to have attracted large drug rings because of its location and the ability to easily blend into the community.
